“Every child must be a reader”, was this year aim of Leon A. Garcia Sr. Elementary School. Thus, last November 21-25, 2011, the school held a one-week long celebration for the Reading Month.
The Drop Everything And Read (Project DEAR) was revived to give essence to the said celebration. Every 8:30 in the morning the bell rings and students will read any books they like. Classroom teachers supervised their class to ensure massive participation.
In addition, “Big Brother/Big Sister” was introduced as a new way of peer reading strategy. An independent reader will mentor a classmate who are at the frustration level, or especially the non-readers, how to speed up their reading skills.
The activity ended with a Reading Camp Culminating Program wherein each class showcased various talents in reading. This includes rhyme and poem interpretation, declamation, readers’ theater, oral interpretation and speech choir in theater.
LAGES students and teachers enjoyed and learned a lot from this activity.
